Little Mermaid Costume Information

The Little Mermaid Costume Recommendations:

 

Check out the look of your character in Disney’s Little Mermaid movie, but then go online and check out the broadway version of the cartoon.    This can easily be found on line and will give you the ideas for color and look.  Most of these costumes can be put together with thing you have at home or may have to add a few pieces.  You don’t have to but may wish to order the costume.

 

Sea Creatures:  Your costumes should be representative of fish but do not have to be actual big round creatures with tails. Think material that looks like it has fish scales.  Silver,gold, orange, shades of blues and greens are all good. Strips of material trailing off arms and/back will help look like you are swimming.  You will be on stage most of the play and must be able to move freely, sit and dance. Brightly colored T-shirt’s over a cami can be cut to look like fish scales. Add paint for fun and contrast. Shoes can be ballet slippers, or small sneakers to match your costume color.  These can be found at AC Moore for a few dollars.  

 

Sailors:  White t-shirts, blue square neckerchiefs with knot ties in the front and little white sailor hats.  Pants can be your blue school sweatpants. You should get together and order the hats online, but make sure you order the adult size.

 

Pilot:  More formal than the other sailors.  You can wear the sailor hat with the brim you have. White or blue pants, and for a shirt you can do one of 2 things.  Either wear a white shirt with epaulets sewn on shoulders and badge pinned to chest, or a blue and white wide striped t-shirt with a red bandana tied around your neck.

Mermaid sisters:  Shades of blue into turquoise: Your costumes should be made together so there is the variety of colors and the “tales” look alike. Stretchy, shiny fabric with elastic waist slimmed down to below your knees.  Coordinating fabric that they use for tutus can be added around your ankles. If someone is making your costume and they have another idea, that is fine as long as you can walk in it. This way you can walk but it will also look pretty and cover your feet. Get a coordinating tank top to go with it.  You may also like to put a flower in your hair or other small accessories.

 

Chef Louis:  Large white chef hat and chef coat.  

 

Chefs:  White shirts and aprons. (full body apron not just the waist kind). Chef hats that are not the tall white ones but the kind that tilt to the side (baker style) You may want to get together and order these online.  There are many at good prices. Apron color can be red,orange or yellow .Keep them all the same and solid. Again , order together online.

 

Prince Eric:  A slightly oversized white shirt worn with the collar open.  Blue pants, red belt, and black boots if you have them.  The boots would be more like womens riding boots, not the clunky mens snow boots. Possibly a relative may have them to fit you.

 

Grimsby: Short pants with long white socks (think baseball pant style that hits just below the knees).  A solid pair of shoes , white shirt with red ascot and some kind of jacket that looks like a butler style. Stay away from purple as Ursula and the bad guys will be in that color.  Pants can be gray, white, black. (if you have another color it may also work, just let me know)

 

Princesses:  Long gown or dress. Please don’t buy one just for this.  If you don’t have one try to borrow or try the Salvation Army.You can wear a tiara if you would like.

 

Scuttle and Gulls:  Think white and feathers. A white shirt with extra fabric attached to the sleeves like wings or feathers.  Yellow or orange noses and legs up to the knee then white shorts.

 

Tentacles:  Purple or purple/gray/green/black.  Have fun putting together a costume.  You can tease up your hair, Your costume should reflect your “dark, slimy” side.  But make sure you can dance and move in it.

 

Flotsam and Jetsam: You are the spies for Ursula, so your costume should have similar colors - purple, slime green, black, and maybe a little yellow.  But the outfits, although similar, can be different.  Think sleek, slimy eels. Have fun with your hair. You may want to start with shiney printed workout pants, or something like that and a long sleeve t-shirt and paint it.  See me if you want a “paint party” after school one day.

 

SeaHorse:  Pull up your hair in a high ponytail for your mane. You are the king’s sergeant at arms.  Bright colors.

 

Carlotta: You take care of the Palace and Prince.  Something along the lines of a maid’s costume.  You can but don’t have to be black and white.
